World War II veteran honored during flag retirement ceremony

Hancovsky, 90, of Euclid, enlisted in the Army during 1944 and was stationed in Germany during World War II. “He’s so proud of the time he served,” his daughter Karen Franks said. Hancovsky was honored during the June 10 flag retirement ceremony at the DeJohn Funeral Home and Celebration Center in Chester Township. AdvertisementHe was joined by his family at the ceremony, including his wife Eileen. Eileen was “the first and only date” he had after he returned home from service in 1946. A year later they were married and will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary in November. Hancovsky is the former commander of a VFW post in Wickliffe and was a long time participant in veterans’ parades, but is now limited in what he can participate in, Franks said. “To be honored, I think is good for his well-being,” she said. With the number of WWII veterans dwindling, Ross DeJohn Jr. said it’s important to honor those who served while they’re still here. “I always say, if it wasn’t for those who served in World War II, we’d probably be speaking German or Japanese,” he said. Ross DeJohn Jr. is the CEO of DeJohn Funeral Homes and is an Army veteran. Other participants in the flag retirement ceremony included Local Boy Scout Troop 91, West Geauga Service Unit 773, Chardon VFW Post 6519, Willoughby Hills VFW Post 4358, Burton-Middlefield American Legion Post 459 & Auxiliary, Munson Township Trustee Andy Bushman and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Hancovsky did the honors of placing the retired flag into the fire during ceremony. Other flags collected are cremated in the on-site crematory of the DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home in Willoughby Hills.“Retiring flags provides a service to our community and to our nation,” Ross DeJohn Jr. said.
